DC-Area Faith-Leaders Responding to Coronavirus

CollaborateUp and the Interfaith Council of Metropolitan Washington, DC hosted an interactive roundtable and media briefing on how faith leaders and faith organizations are responding to the COVID-19 crisis. This is the second in a series of CollaborateUp roundtable discussions on multi-sector collaboration in crisis. Watch the webinar at this link.

The discussion was moderated by CollaborateUp CEO Richard Crespin and speakers and panelists included:

Rabbi Gerry Serotta, Executive Director of the Interfaith Council of Metropolitan Washington, DC

Father Rámon Dominguez, Program Director, Don Bosco Center, Catholic Diocese of Arlington

Rabbi Abbi Sharofsky, JCRC’s Director of Intergroup Relations & JCRC’s Rabbi-in-Residence

Elder Kevin Calderwood, Area Seventy, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Washington, DC, Maryland, Virginia

Imam Talib Shareef, President and Imam, Masjid Muhammad, The Nation’s Mosque, Washington, DC & Chairman of the Board of the Interfaith Council of Metropolitan Washington, DC

Topics discussed included specific programs and actions these organizations have taken to help vulnerable populations in the area, ideas for honoring religious traditions and ceremonies at home, and guidance on upcoming large religious celebrations including Easter, Passover, and Ramadan. The panel also discussed the role of faith leaders in helping their congregants balance science and faith, continue volunteering while following safety guidelines, and creating a stronger community — staying physically distant while spiritually close.
